Why I do what I do

Malene’s background, and over 20 years of experience is in MOTHERHOOD …and Interior Design/Indoor Architecture. She is a COLOUR Specialist, and a Faux Finish/Texture artist. Prompted by awareness of indirectly feeding her son, what she put on her body through breastfeeding, Malene began with the experimentation and creation of clean and natural skin care products after the birth of her youngest in 2005. |
Malene expanded her products to include make-up in 2011, after seeing how her daughter Maya and fellow dance company members applied layers of toxic conventional products on their faces for their performances on stage. Convinced that surely there must be a better way... The idea for Conscious Cosmetics was conceived.
Malene is Danish born, lived most of her childhood in the Netherlands and Denmark, and spent most of her teens in West and Central Africa. On a visit, she fell head over heels in LOVE with Vancouver, Canada, and moved there from the Netherlands with her family in 2000.

She now is happily part of the Bowen Island Community, where she lives on top of the world (literally) with her husband, and cutie son Simeon. On a perfect day you will find her snuggled up in the most comfy seat in her home devouring a historical romance novel along with something chocolate ;) ♥ |

Conscious Cosmetics Make-Up Line... Not just another pretty face
So yeah, woman's lib all the way... I am a great believer in freedom, my body is my temple (a sometimes messy work-in-progress kind of temple...), I rarely wear a bra, I drive a hybrid car, I don't eat anything with a former pulse, natural childbirth.. puleeze, been there, done that, AND... I LOVE make-up and a pair of high heels!

When I set my intent to develop the Conscious Cosmetics line, I wanted to create a Make-up System that is GLORIOUS, PLAYFUL, and BEAUTIFULLY accentuates the facial features, while at the same time providing care and nutrition to YOUR body.

Whether derived from petroleum (yes, as in gasoline), or natural organic sources, at best alcohol dries out and irritates the skin, and at worst may be cytotoxic (an agent that kills the cell). The nastiest forms of alcohol include ethanol, denatured alcohol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, and isopropyl.
I have found ways around the use of alcohol, creating WONDERFUL PRODUCTS that are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral, without ever compromising the body’s well being! YEAH :)

Solid, Concentrated & No Nonsense!
All Conscious Cosmetics creations are concentrated. I don't not dilute or water down our products, nor do I add fillers or ANY OTHER NONSENSE OF ANY KIND!
All Creams and Facial Cleansers are SOLID in room temperature. Our liquid products are concentrated as well, and are fluent because of the nature of the whole ingredients.
No use of any fragrance ingredients, EVER! Only Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are used in the products for their beneficial gifts and beautiful scents.
All the ingredients in our products are ACTIVE meaning that they serve a specific purpose to the performance of the product.
Because of this, you will need a lot less product, as a little goes a very long way ♥

All excited, feeling slightly righteous I walked through an “All Natural” cosmetics isle for the first time looking for a lipgloss… I found one… at $30 a piece… and walked right out of the store thinking about all the other wonderful things that I could do with $30…
Now I get it though, being in 'the biz.' Natural ingredients are generally about 10 times more costly than chemical derivatives (it's like comparing the cost of a litre of Premium Quality Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, with a litre of gasoline), and is a huge expense for any independent natural cosmetics producer.
In spite of the cost, it is an absolute priority for me to make our products available to as many of you as possible, as I strongly believe that health should not be compromised by economics.
I am committed to create, and keep a price point for our products that reflect this inclusive policy ♥

And just like with other fresh and “alive” ingredients you will know if they are still suitable for use by their scent... in other words, if a product starts to smell (or look) funny, it is time for a fresh one.

On average, 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed, and ends up directly in the bloodstream (bypassing the liver!) within 17 minutes, from where it is transported to cells all over the body.
There I was... mother of our newborn "surprise child," 10 years after the birth of his sister, and 12 years after I received my two stepdaughters. YES, things were going to be different this time... much more experienced, aware, and wiser, I was determined to be on top of everything... Ehm, right...
By this time I read every food label, and had switched over to natural household cleaners. This is when I thought to examine my cosmetics, starting with the day cream that I had been using for years. Turning the box over, I began to read the ingredient list and understood exactly one item... Aqua. The rest was all Greek to me, or more precise, Latin. Internet here we come...
The deeper I researched, the darker my finds became... WHAT THE F@#*!, about sums it up.
As a rule, I think, write, and speak focusing on the light in everything, emphasizing the positive and beneficial. In this case however, I choose to stray from this, as I have found no positive way to formulate the deforming, and deadly poisonous effects of chemicals used in the cosmetics industry.

YES, things were going to be different this time... much more experienced, aware, and wiser, I was determined to be on top of everything... Ehm, right...

In a nutshell, about 83,000 different chemicals are used in cosmetics, of which only a few hundred have been tested, none of them have been cross-tested (what happens when you combine one chemical with others). On average, 1 out of 8 ingredients in cosmetic products are carcinogenic, neurotoxic, and/or toxic to the reproductive system, causing countless different conditions, illnesses, and deaths.
Toxins like lead, aluminum, mercury, chlorine, fluorite, formaldehyde, and parabens, to name a few, are found in anything from lipstick to baby shampoo.
A recent study found lead in 21 of 26 brands of lipsticks tested (including 'natural' and 'organic' brands, the quantity of lead ranging between 10-100 times the allowed dose, even though there is no safe dose of lead for humans.
Ingredients that are categorized as “accidental” (oops, I dropped a bucket of formaldehyde into the lip gloss mixer?!), or that are considered “trade secrets” (fragrance and perfume that can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals), are not required to be mentioned on the ingredients list.
Health Canada and the FDA hold no authority, and can only make recommendations. “Natural” and “medicinal” products are not regulated at all, and their producers abuse that right shamelessly and systematically, hiding behind clever words and marketing :(
And surprise, surprise, the same corporate cartels that brought you all this misery, will gladly sell you your chemo therapy, and all their other “medications and treatments”, when the time comes.
Every year millions of animals are tortured and killed by the cosmetics industry. I would very much like to think that we are better than that, and would love nothing more than to stop this cruelty by encouraging everyone to buy products that are not tested on animals.
*Our products are strictly vegetarian. We do use (with much gratitude and respect!) Organic Raw Canadian Honey and Organic Beeswax, that are expertly made by our fellow earthlings. No ingredients are used in our products and production process that are harmful or kill animals (this is the reason why we do not use Carmine). Our products are only tested on friends and family (none of which are animals :))

You mad yet? I was... furious! Especially since I had to face the fact that I had systematically poisoned myself and my family for years. Reading that breast milk is now the most toxic food, while nursing my son, made me want to hurt someone... instead I began to search for better ways, and went to work.
I very strongly encourage you to please do your own research on what you put in, and on your body, and spread your findings far and wide.
