INCI International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients
In our experience many people find most of the INCI names very confusing, as they sound nothing like the “normal name” for the ingredient. In addition, some names resemble chemicals, and do not sound “trustworthy”. We much prefer plain language, and have chosen to name our ingredients for what they are, unfortunately we are required to include the INCI system as well. Canada, the US, the European Union, and others, have adopted the INCI coding system. In their own words... “It is the goal of the cosmetic industry to have a single worldwide reference, based on sound science, which will allow the identification of the composition of personal care products. The widespread use and international recognition of INCI names can be attributed to the use of uniform, science-based ingredient names that minimize the language barriers that often hinder consumer understanding and international trade. A key element of this acceptance is the establishment of a single ingredient labeling name for each material that promotes a common understanding throughout the world”
